Roundtable: Strengthening Effectiveness of IPRs Enforcement and the Role of Press

On August 9, 2016, the National Office of Intellectual Property - NOIP and the Japan International Cooperation Agency - JICA co-hosted the “Strengthening Effectiveness of IPRs Enforcement and the Role of Press” roundtable. The event was attended by competent authorities, entrepreneurs and senior executives in professional services and consulting.

According to the statistic, in 2015, the Economic Police handled 613 infringement cases, in which there were 113 cases to be instituted criminal proceedings before the court and 145 accused persons. 

The representative of Market Management Department (MMD) said that in the first 6 months of 2016, the MMD discovered 925 infringement cases, fined 5.5 billion VND.

The Inspectorate of the Ministry of Science & Technology provided the information on the fight against counterfeiting. Sources report that, in the period of 2012 - 2015, the Inspectorate handled 485 cases, imposed with monetary fine more than 5 billion VND with respect to counterfeiting and intellectual property infringement. In the first 6 months of 2016, there were over 50 cases being raided upon the IP holder’s request.

Addressing the seminar, Mr. Le Ngoc Lam, Deputy Director of the NOIP held that the Press will play an important role in propaganda against the counterfeiting and IP infringement acts for special benefit of both the economy and consumers.
