Thailand Granted Geographical Indication recognition to Buon Ma Thuot Coffee

On September 18, 2014, the Department of Intellectual Property of Thailand granted Geographical Indication Registration to Viet Nam's Buon Ma Thuot coffee after the investigation to the Buon Ma Thuot region in August.

“Buon Ma Thuot” coffee is grown in the districts of Dak Lak Province, Vietnam such as Cu M’gar, Ea H’leo, Krong Ana, Krong Buk, Krong Nang, Krong Pak and Buon Ma Thuot city. At this point, “Buon Ma Thuot” coffee is the second Vietnam’s GI being protected overseas, following to "Phu Quoc" GI for fish sauce protected in EU.

Recently, Pham & Associates represented the Association of Buon Ma Thuot Coffee in an effort to successful cancel the trademark registration “Buon Ma Thuot Coffee” in China. So far, Buon Ma Thuot Coffee has been applied for collective mark protection in 17 countries around the world and being exported to 60 countries and territories.
